A Pro Russian hacktivist group have claimed responsibility for the AT&T outages that left many customers' phones stuck on 'SOS mode,'

Groups 62IX, the People Liberation Front, and Anonymous Legion claimed responsibility for the incident.


These groups, which a cybersecurity expert criticized as being pro-Russian, have also claimed responsibility for other US telecommunications outages.

But the claim is false, claimed cybersecurity and hacktivism expert who goes by the alias 'CyberKnow' in a post on X.

It's an example of what the writer called 'post-event victim claiming', designed to sew confusion and bolster their reputations.




The claims about AT&T's outages came from multiple groups, including one called 'Anonymous Legion,' which uses the Guy Fawkes mask as its signature look.





CyberKnow claims to be an expert on 'situational awareness' and 'threat intelligence,' as well as a 'hacktivist tracker' and 'meme farmer.'

'Pro-Russian hacktivists falsely claim the AT&T and other US telecommunications outages,' CyberKnow wrote.

'62IX, the Peoples Liberation Front and Anonymous Legion claim to be responsible,' they continued.

'What we have here is an example of 'post-event victim claiming' - in which hacktivist groups use screenshots, like this example from downdetector once an event has lots of media attention and then try and claim it was their attack. Anonymous Sudan has done this on occasion as well.
It's a form of information manipulation and also an attempt to build internal reputation in the hacktivist community.'

In short, once a disruption has happened, a group fabricates evidence that they were responsible.

The goals of such an action are twofold: It spreads misinformation, and it bolsters a group's reputation as powerful and prodigious among other hackers.

A screenshot attached to the X post showed that someone had shared telecommunication outage data on the social media app Discord, using it to claim responsibility for the People Liberation Front.

So far authorities have not names who is responsible for the AT&T outage, or whether the issue seemed to be due to hackers.

Even if the groups are not responsible, they are also not idle threat makers. 

CyberKnow calls them 'pro-Russian'

62IX, for instance, has a history of ransomware attacks, in which they encrypt all the files on a computer network and threaten to delete them unless they receive payment.

Based on reports from their victims, the group changes file names, tacking on '62IX' at the end so victims know which files have been locked down by the group.

CyberKnow referred to the groups as 'pro-Russian,' but Anonymous has shown its opposition to Putin, declaring war on Russia's cybersecurity ecosystem last year.
